Receive God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

How to go to Confession
If it has been a long time, do not worry. Tell the priest, and he will help you through it.
- Prepare. Spend a few quiet minutes asking the Holy Spirit to help you remember your sins. The questions below can help.
- Begin. The priest welcomes you. Make the Sign of the Cross and say how long it has been since your last confession.
- Confess. Tell your sins simply and honestly. Confess any serious (mortal) sins by kind and, as best you can, how many times.
- Listen. The priest may offer a few words of counsel and gives you a penance, such as a prayer or an act of charity.
- Pray an act of contrition. Tell God you are sorry, using the prayer below or your own words.
- Receive absolution. The priest prays the words of absolution. Answer “Amen.”
- Go in peace. Do your penance soon, and thank God for his mercy.
Examination of conscience
- Have I made time for God in prayer? Have I put anything (money, work, pleasure) ahead of him? Have I turned to fortune-telling or horoscopes?
- Have I used God’s name carelessly or in anger?
- Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holy days of obligation without a serious reason?
- Have I honored my parents, cared for my family, and been faithful to my responsibilities at home and at work?
- Have I hurt anyone by my actions or my words? Have I held on to anger or refused to forgive? Have I taken part in or encouraged an abortion?
- Have I been chaste in my thoughts, words and actions? Have I been faithful to my spouse? Have I looked at pornography?
- Have I stolen, cheated, or damaged what belongs to someone else? Have I shared with people in need?
- Have I lied, gossiped, or harmed someone’s good name?
- Have I been envious of others or greedy for what they have?
Act of Contrition
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen.
